Read the quote by Elie Wiesel located on page one of our class syllabus. (It has also been copied and pasted for you below.) In one developed and thoughtful paragraph (5-7 sentences), offer an interpretation of this quote, and explain its relevancy to today. In other words, explain what this quote means to you (and to all people in contemporary or modern society), AND provide 1-2 real world examples of where you see this occurring OR where this idea/concept is greatly needed. ReplyDeleteThis quote means that whenever there is a conflict of views today all of the world focuses on that issue and begins to take a stand on the topic. This has happened a plethora of times in the U.S. especially recently. One of the most common times this appears is with the recent conflicts between the police and non white americans. One of the biggest places this was seen was in Ferguson. Another big conflict today is with those opposed to Trump and those supporting him. In a recent speech Donald Trump was giving, he was talking and a person was peacefully protesting-not saying anything-simple holding up a sign and was assaulted by a Trump supporter and was brutally beaten and stomped by the attacker.

DeleteWhat i think this quote mean is that all those views are the main topic of society now adays. Nothing else in this world seems to matter in any way more than those topics. people are so uptight about this and that like oh he called me a cracker or she said only aferican americans are in the hood or anything like that, those are the only topics people seem to argue the most about like why dont we talk more about the military or the most life threatening things people have faced, the things that matter it shouldnt matter what your race is or what your political view is everybody should be equal as one and not argue about the little things. People are all about the drama in life and thats why those topics are the center of atention because people could go on fighting for hours on who the best candidate is or my race is better. Our society is soo uptight about what other people think and how our society should be when all we need to do is live our lives happy and not worry about all of the things in life that dont matter. - Dylan butcher

ReplyDeleteI believe this is a very strong and accurate quote because it seems like when a race/political/religion conflict comes up, thats all the media and everyone else focuses on, for a long time.. its like people live off the drama-like we cant live without it, thats basically what the quote is saying.

This quote is telling about how important it is for people to pay attention and not allow social injustices to go unanswered and unpunished for. This quote is saying that we must focus on racism and other forms of intolerable injustices and not let those who face these obstacles go without help.
ReplyDeleteI think this quote means that places of inequality become the center of the universe because of the new attention they receive. The idea of correcting wrongs is still very relevant today, and it has been for centuries because morals have always guided us as a species. For example, Germany became the center of the world during World War II because that's where we were fighting to end the discrimination caused by the Nazis. There is also a lot of attention directed towards Syria now due to the persecution caused by terrorist groups. The area currently appears to be "the center of the universe," but it hasn't always been because this persecution hasn't always been an issue.

This quote shows how if a certain people group is being unfairly treated or even killed because of their race, religion, or other beliefs, the world needs to take notice and try to help out. There are a ton of examples of this stretching from the Holocaust, up to today where terrorists will target people that do not agree with them.
ReplyDeleteso because men or a women are persecuted or treated differently because of their races, religion, or political veiws they become upset or depressed about this topic so they talk to whomever and so they because "the center of the universe" because by this time everyone around them will hear about it. Therefore its like when some talks about you and then you hear about and then you tell everyone.
ReplyDeleteAn interpretation may include that Wiesel is explaining how social discrimination should not simply be a matter to push off to the side. Wiesel explains that when unfair social persecution occurs it should be the top priority of others to find a resolution to the wrongdoing. This concept has been needed around the world both now and in the past such as discrimination of religion like that seen in the past with Hitler's discrimination of jews and now we begin to see a similar pattern with discrimination against arabic and Muslim religions. This concept has been used when large groups of people come together to protest for a certain cause such as recent police brutality that has become more and more common in the United States. The quote dose have quite a bit of relevancy today, as social justice is protested and tested more and more in our ever-changing society, but it has been relevant for most of history as genocide and social injustices have been prevalent for hundreds of years before now.
ReplyDeleteThis quote means to me that whenever there is a major issue in today's society all of the world will/should give their attention to it and resolve the problem. This has been shown in the past with events such as world war II and the holocaust. Major world leaders put their focus on helping the Jews as they were being prosecuted by Hitler. In today's society racial issues have been seen and/or talked about with the issue of police brutality. People have put their time into resolving the issue of police forces vs. african americans.
ReplyDeleteTo me; this quote would mean that if someone is being treated unfairly because of their belief in religion or political views, most people feel the need to retaliate quicker and more violently than they would retaliate on a different issue. There are several issues that can relate to this quote, mostly issues labeled as racism. For example, some people treat Arabic or Islamic people wrong because of 9/11. Not just because of their race, but because of the fear other people have because of terrorism in the past and who was involved. Another issue that could relate to this quote is, Sandra Bland's situation; when she was arrested and then dead in custody. People now start to have a hatred for police because innocent people who are killed by them or at least thats how people view it. I feel like this quote relates a lot to real life; especially the part saying, " that place must-at that moment- become the center of the universe," sadly because of the amount of violence that is labeled unfair and how people choose to react to it.
ReplyDeleteThis quote basically is just saying that whenever any type of conflict, particularly race, religion, and political views in this situation, everyone basically has a say in the problem and that is their main focus at the moment. One example of this quote would be anything having to do with the political debate, specifically Donald Trump. Sadly, in one of his debates a person who was not for Donald Trump attended and basically was hurt physically because of it, mainly because he was of the opposite race and everyone who attended was all white. Then after this event, a video of it went viral and everyone was all worried about it. This being, the quote describes quite a bit of what is going on in the real world, both good and bad.
ReplyDeleteI believe this quote is saying that we have had this conflict for a long time. When something like this does happen everyone hears about it and it follows us for a while. I think this quote is making us aware of what is going on in hopes that eventually things will change.
ReplyDeleteThe quote is saying that the people shall pay attention to the places where people who are different get treated in a worse way. It shows that there is sometimes no acceptance and that that is a problem, that we should focus on the moments, when that happens to make it better and to make a difference. Today we see that refugees get treated in a different way then other people, just because they are from a different country, where are problems, war. The world should focus on making their life better, but with no acceptance people make it worse.

It becomes so huge because their are so many different opinions and people willing to fight for what they believe in, bringing a lot of attention to the situation. For example, when the holocaust happened many people where helping and fighting for the prosecuted.
ReplyDeleteA meaning behind Elie Wiesel's quote is that when an individual is being prosecuted for who they are, a factor which they cannot control, it is so significant that it is a persons whole entire world at risk. This situation is depicted in many events in history and in present time. Right now there are religions being persecuted because of terrorism despite religion not making up the group of terrorists. This results in harsh backlash against innocent lives and controversy that splits nations into groups. This has occurred many times before and continues to happen today. We have seen the holocaust and right now we are seeing "Black Lives Matter". With so many different opinions, there are multiple ways of looking at the problem but still no way to fix it.
ReplyDeleteI believe this quote means when people are mistreated and persecuted because of race, religion, or political differences then that place should be focused on until justice is served and the people are no longer mistreated. I think this quote is very relevant in today's society because people are mistreated for all different reasons and sometimes people just blow it off. When really we need to focus on it and do everything we can to fix the problem. This is shown in the Middle East where ISIS is terrorizing people who do not have the same believes as they do. People are mistreated all around the world everyday because they are different, we should highlight these places and work to get rid of social injustices.

This is because all of these topics are personal. In todays society and also in the passed, we see discrimination against topics that should be respected.

I take this quote to mean that when there is a persecution that people believe are based on gender, race, or religion alone; that it becomes the biggest thing in the eyes of the media and the eyes of the public. The quote is very relevant to the current events of today due to the race riots in baltimore that occurred a while back, or even the Martin v. Zimmerman case and the riots that followed his death, the media followed all of these very closely, an argument can be made that it was the journalists doing there jobs by reporting on these events, but it almost seems that you hear about the convictions of these cases and the consequences that follow (riots). I believe that the quote is very accurate in the sense that when you watch the news you see about a 30 second segment about a white man being shot by the police and everyone usually accepts that it was the man who was shots fault, but after the segment is over you see a ten to twenty minute report about how a minority was shot or if a woman was shot and then you see everyone call it an outrage and how the authorities need to be put in check. This refers back to quote in a way by saying that when something happens to someone, religion, gender, and race all play a bigger part in what is looked at by the media and by the people.

ReplyDeleteI think this quote means that once someone is persecuted because of their own personal beliefs/views it becomes everyones problem. Everyone has to think that they are right so if someones opinion differs from their own they feel the need to become involved. For example, if I tell you that I am voting for Trump I will most likely be harassed because apparently Trump is "racist". I do not agree with that though and that is my opinion which I have every right to be entitled to.
ReplyDeleteWhenever a society breaches the foundations of normalcy when it comes to respect for the diversity among sovereign peoples, all societies turn their attention to it, mainly because rational entities see it as a threat to the peace and justice of their social order. This has been true throughout history, as we've seen with cases such as Hitler's third reich, Mussolini's fascist movements, or Joseph Stalin's regime. In modern times we can see it in multiple places. For instance, we see organizations such as ISIS breaching human rights for peoples throughout the territory they claim, and the result was a collective of national entities aimed specifically at dissolving ISIS and their ideals. The Peoples Republic of Korea has gained a plethora of international attention due to the Kim family regime's incredible disregard for basic human rights, and their controversy over claims of nuclear war power. We can also see it in our own nation, with charismatic people swaying masses into adopting their rather radical, fascist ideas, one of course being Donald Trump, a man who has not instilled any form of actual direct violence, however has raised ideas that could very well lead to civil unrest in the future. This man has taken the media by storm, further proving the above quotes intended message.

DeleteI believe the quote gives a sense of urgen cy to today's issues. It outlines the problem's of then and today's society with racial profiling and discrimination. I think this quite should be a a wake up call to our generation to not judge people for how they look, but for how they are as a person. This hashappened in many cases around the world recently, such as Ferguson. Also the earlier case of the African-American teen Trayvon Martin.
ReplyDeleteThis quote is saying that all men and women need to stick togather regardless of race, sex, or religion. Also this quote is stating that the places that do judge others based on these resins should become the center of attention for everyone to see to get this resolved.
ReplyDeleteI believe what this quote is trying to say is that , whenever something tragic happens , it then becomes the center of attention other for a short time or a very long time. But that one thing is pushed so far into the spotlight because it other offends people or touches people, it really doesn't matter how it got there but when it makes national news, or becomes trending on twitter or etc. Its in the spotlight. Its there , screaming for everyone. But honestly i haven't heard anything about the shooting sense it stop trending on twitter.

The situation would need to be brought to attention there for he says "that place must at that moment become the center of the earth". I think Elie wants us to take away that conflict happens everywhere and people need to realize it and try to help bring attention to the matter so it can be fixed.

I think this quote is relevant right now because the presidential election is coming up so some are being shamed for their political views.
ReplyDeleteTo me this quote means that just because they are a certain race, certain religion, or have different political views doesn't mean they're different than everyone. If someone has a certain viewpoint on a topic, they're in their own world of explanation for reasoning as to why they feel that way. No one person is different than everyone else. There is always someone that has the same viewpoints as you. There may be a lot of people that agree with you but there can also be a lot of people that don't agree with you.
ReplyDeleteI believe this quote is a very important topic to be discussed and figured out in today's society. I think it interprets to mean that social discrimination should not be pushed to the side but rather be fixed and focused on. Social discrimination has been a reoccurring problem in the world recently and all throughout history. Discrimination against African Americans throughout time and World War 2 with Hitler discriminating against the Jewish religion and resulting in the Holocaust. In today's time there's an issue with discrimination against Muslims and refugees and immigrants trying to come to America. Discrimination is a world wide issue today that is spread much quicker in today's age through social media and will proceed to happen; yet is disagreed upon by so many.

These problems plague our "modern society" and is one of the largest issues that we face that we can actually do something about. Social injustice is present in many places such as the workplace, and establishments of higher education. It wares many masks: racism, sexism, poverty, etc. The quote exemplifies the idea that it is each and everyone of our duties to face this issue head-on, as we (humanity itself) is the prime culprit of this dilemma.

New ways to act like you've been hurt somehow by someone else, or bring down a race or gender just because. Everyone now is so sensitive and starving for attention. People need to chill out.

To me the quote also shows how when a certain event occurs the media responds quickly, whether positively or negatively, and their views then affect the way the readers see the event. For example, with the Terrorist Attack on 9/11, certain people act differently towards people of certain ethnicity due to certain accusations. Another example in todays society are racial stereotypes. With racial stereotypes people are grouped together due to the color of their skin/or their ethnicity.

What Wiesel meant by "become the center of the universe" is that persecution should not just be accepted, but everyone should do something to put an end to it. An example of this message is how ISIS terrorizes people who does not believe the same as them. People around the world see this as a threat and as wrong, and try to put a stop to it. This is a perfect example because not only is persecution taking place, but people are making it "the center of the universe."

This is because people have their own opinions about certain things and when something occurs that they don't agree upon, they make it their job to state why and prove as to how they're right. Then, the whole situation involving discrimination becomes a huge controversy involving many individuals with different opinions. This has occurred throughout the world's history, involving political issues, discrimination against certain races, religions, etc. For instance, now that Donald Trump is stating how he wants to give each Muslim a certain number, due to their choice of religion of course, people are developing their own opinions towards the subject and the topic is becoming noticed by individuals worldwide. More so, situations involving white cops and blacks is a very controversial issue and it attracts the attention of many. Since this topic involves race, it is noticed and discussed by thousands around the world as well.

Judging someone based on how they look or things they believe in isn't right at all. We saw this issue during segregation in the south. Just because someone was black, they didn't have the same freedoms as the whites did. Most of the whites in the south didn't want the blacks to have the same rights as them and I don't think it is fair that just because they have a different skin color, that they should be discriminated.

And when someone does make it big then the whole area where this event has/had taken place makes this huge and then the surrounding areas make it big there too until every one knows about it. People can't control these features about them and now they are being judged for it.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Elie Wiesel was trying to emphasize that persecution today, whether based off religion, race, or politics, is always put in the spotlight, and is the main concern of the population. This is very true today, for whenever some social injustice occurs anywhere in the world, the U.S. media eats up the story. For example, ISIS is often in the news, and because of the horrors this terrorist group has caused, many Americans are skeptical of Muslims entering our country, like the Syrian Refugee Crisis. The media had a field day, and it was major controversy for weeks. Another example, is the Martin vs. Zimmerman case, and others like it, where there was a huge debate over whether racism was a factor or not of the Martin's death. The media covered this for months. Overall, this quote comes to show that persecution is prominent and people always take a stance and try to make it known, in order for change.
ReplyDeleteI think this quote means that when someone is discriminated or persecuted against for any reason, they should defend themselves and what they stand for. They should make it known that they were discriminated against so they do not receive unfair treatment in the future. This quote could apply to the recent events in the Middle East and around the world where ISIS and other terrorist groups are attacking people based on their religion. It could also be related to the Holocaust when the Nazis and Hitler were persecuting Jews and other people based on their race, religion, political views, etc. Finally, it could apply to the era of civil injustices in the 1900s when colored people and white people were segregated in public places like schools.

It becomes a problem in society and we as a society should solve that issue right then and there before it becomes a problem. One instance of it getting out of hand it the holocaust where the jewish faith was being punished for no reason. The other is at the trump rallies where people have been slandering political views and getting all worked up over nothing.
ReplyDeleteThe quote by Elie Wiesel is saying that when a controversy arises based on an injustice regarding race, religion, or political views, it becomes a topic of interest for everyone. People attach to the subject and develop an opinion of the issue. This has happened many times throughout history, and I believe even more so today with the media and effectiveness of news. Real life examples can be seen as far back as WWII with Hitler and the Holocaust-people were harshly persecuted mostly because of religion but other things as well, and Germany became a focus for other countries during the war time. This event still has an impact on the world, with most likely any student being able to describe the event and has learned about the tragedy many times throughout their education. This quote isn't necessarily negative or positive, but more of a fact of society and I agree with it.

ReplyDeleteThis quote is saying that people need to band together to make sure that everybody is treated fairly. Times have changed and people of different races, religions, and ethnicities are definitely treated more fairly; but there is no doubt that we have a ways to go. I think that today the message of this quote is overlooked. Here in America, we live in a little all-about-us bubble. People think that every issue that arises, like police brutality and white-on-black crime, is racist; but that isn't the case. While we are here accusing our law enforcement, Christians in N. Korea are being put in concentration camps and in the middle-east women are being refused education. I think people need to think more in perspective and open up to the real issues at hand.

ReplyDeleteThis quote means that whatever the conflict may be, wherever in the world it might take place, or whoever is involved, that issue must be looked at by the entire universe. Everybody must become accustomed to what is happening and come together to resolve whatever issue may be presented before them. It should not matter if you're male or female, black or white, christian or catholic. If there is even the smallest issue, everybody should care, everybody should be involved in helping out and actually trying to make a change. If someone is persecuted because of their own personal views on life, then it becomes everybody's problem.

ReplyDeleteThe quote basically outlines the fact that when people are being mistreated for something they shouldn't be mistreated for, everyone else needs to help them. I agree with the quote in an idealistic way, but in reality it just isn't possible. People are always going to be mistreated for some aspect about them, right now Muslims being automatically assumed terrorists. Latinos in America being viewed as "job-stealers." I wish society reacted the way this quote says we should, but it does not and probably never will.
ReplyDeleteI believe this quote is saying that whenever there is controversy involving religion, race, and political views the people of the country need to band together and solve the problems to make this place a better place to live. We all have our own opinions on topics. Especially you see with ISIS they are killing Americans for what they believe in and we are doing as much as we can but we can do better that what we are and we need to ban together better. You also see with the debate happening right now that people will express their opinions of their political beliefs and it will defend people but we need to respect those opinions.

ReplyDeleteThe quote is saying that when someone is punished for who they are it becomes a big problem to everyone. First off, people should be punished for what they did. What they did should not have any relationship with who they are, whether it is their religion, gender, ethnicity, or their political views. At the same time, if someone is suspected of, or being punished for who they are, it should not just automatically become everyone else's problem. Let the right people take care of it and if you weren't there to see it then don't go and make it your issue. If we were to focus on exactly what the person did and not have any bias based on religion, race, etc., things would be much easier. After all, when there is a problem people tend to point fingers at things that aren't even part of the issue.

ReplyDeleteI think that this quote means that when men and women are being persecuted because of their race, or political views that, that is what people should be thinking and talking about instead of something that is pointless. This is the issue that needs to be solved and everyone should be trying to get involved and help out to try and make a change. It shouldn't matter if you are male, female, black, white, or what your political views are. If someone is persecuted because of this then it needs to become everyones problem.
ReplyDeleteI believe this quote is a very accurate interpretation of what is continuing to happen throughout history. Examples include, The Holocaust, The Rwandan Genocide, The Segregation fights, and even the most recent controversy against police violence. I think that Wiesel's quote describes the basic necessities as humans to categorize people into certain groups. If someone is unlike you for whatever reason they are usually not treated the same. This personification of man needs to change, because it is unethical and has started many wars through time. History is literally repeating itself daily.

I also have know idea and personally think this quote was from somebody that wasn't all there. I'm sure that they knew exactly what it means but it makes no kind of sense to me.
ReplyDeleteThis quote means that whenever there is a issue on race, political beliefs or religion, people want to be apart of the solution to that problem. Also, people need to help prevent segregation on anything such as discrimination on race or religion. People should not be mistreated for the color of their skin or the religion they believe in.
ReplyDeleteMy interpretation of this quote is that any nation, area, or city that does not provide equal protection for their citizens and their lifestyles, it needs to be addressed immediately by all nations and citizens. This is relevant to our nation as of today, for some candidates running for president look to persecute those who do not follow a set way of life, based on either religion or skin color. This quote serves as a wakeup call to fellow citizens and I, as we must act to ensure that such a candidate does not reach the office of president, to keep our nation from becoming unequal towards different religions and races. Examples of where this equality is needed can be countries in the Middle East. Some countries such as the United States hold this type of equality, but there is still work to be done to perfect the concept.
ReplyDeleteThis quote most clearly represents how when some social injustice, societal conflict, or other prejudice-inspired act occurs, that it should be of utmost importance in addressing. This could mean meeting the conflict head-on, or finding ways to subtly resist, but there must be recognition on the side of the oppressed or the problem will never heal. This quote still carries much truth to this day, and relates to any number of injustices. I believe that this truth has parallels with the Black Lives Matter campaign, and other organizations that target individualized discrimination acts.
ReplyDeleteI believe that this quote is saying that when there is a major issue in the world, the society as a whole should come together to solve the problem. There have been many examples of this like World War II, when Germany tried to take over most of the western world and her rid of the Nazis. Another example would be the countries coming together to stop ISIS. An example of this would be the terrorist attack in Paris, when many world leaders came together to come up with a plan to stop ISIS.
ReplyDeleteThe meaning behind this quote is there should not be racism in the world and to stop every case of racism it would take full attention by many individuals. The author of this quote believes that people should not be segregated because of what they believe or the way they look. In todays world racism and segregation is present in our everyday lives, people all around us are categorized by what they look like or what they believe in. This problem is highly present in the world today and working to bring these problems to rest will be an on going task for the years to come.

Whenever men or women are persecuted due to their race, religion, or their set of political views that becomes a issue which gathers attention world wide. For example when World War 2 broke out and persecution against the jews began, this event collected the attention of the entire globe.

Our society has always been stereotypical toward people who are different or look different. If people don't think the way a group does they are prosecuted against or are labeled as bad people.
ReplyDeleteI think that this quote refers to society and that when ever there is someone that is discriminated against everyone feels obligated to help and stand up for that person. Events that relate to this are like ISIS and everything they were doing in the middle east. Also Donald Trump wants to get rid of all illegal immigrants and a lot of people in the world are against it.
ReplyDeleteThis quote continues to pertain to our world today because of the meaning it has. Its saying that people overlook the really awful but important issues in our world. When something like racial, political, or social discrimination occurs the people of the world need to unite together to put an end to it. The topic needs to become the center of the universe or else it will get overlooked and will not be resolved. This quote can be tied together with any serious world issue and I believe that it should be. People need to put those types of issues in the center of their universe if they really want the issues to be resolved. real life examples can be found today in our society. The constant school shootings are becoming more and more common and it seems as if they're only talked about for a short amount of time. These issues need to be put first in the world and in the center of peoples's universes in order for them to truly be resolved.
ReplyDeleteThis quote means that when people are persecuting others for being different than them, then the only reason they're doing so is because they believe that they are better than everyone else. If those people are better than everyone else, than they must be at the center of the universe because they are so important to it. All of this happens because they are better than everyone else and they are the greatest beings in the universe, if only in their mind. But in their mind is all that matters, because why would they listen to the opinions of lesser beings? Adolf Hitler and the rest of the German people thought this, and they started the Holocaust and killed groups of people they thought were lower than them, attempting to commit mass genocide. Some people today in less fortunate countries still refuse to give education and other, what we would consider basic, rights and privileges.
ReplyDeleteThis quote means that when something bad happens, for example genocide or bombings, that event/ place become the thing most talked about. For one obvious example, the holocaust in Germany. During the time, it was a large event and widely talked about. It is still talked about a lot to this day even. Secondly, the genocide in Rwanda. It was a major event that was also widely talked about. Although it was talked about, there was not much done by others. Most of it was handled inside of the country.

This is basically persecuting people for being themselves, which is simply out of their control. This becomes so significant because it affects so many people in the world. This situation has occurred numerous times in history. Right now we can see this with ISIS and the race discrimination because of their terrorism. They have caused an innocent group of people to constantly get associated with their activities. Another event that depicts this quote very well is the Holocaust, With so many ideas on how to fix this issue, there will always be controversy on how we are creating a solution instead of causing a problem.

People tend to hold strong opinions regarding such views, but we cannot let the differences destruct us. A major example of this would be the Holocaust. Adolf Hitler led a mass genocide of millions of Jews, and other groups, from his false belief that they were worth anything less. Events such as this make the whole world stop and take notice, as they should.
ReplyDeleteWell, this quote pretty much says that if one person starts to make fun of ones race, religion, and political views, everyone stops and stares. Even if it is to just watch all of it and to see how it is going down. Or to the people who actually stop and defend those who are being bullied, persecuted, and abused almost for something that they believe in. We shouldn't even be doing this in the first place. Let those believe what they want to believe instead of being all mad at them for what they believe in. Everyone has their own opinions.
ReplyDeleteElie Wiesel is describing the issues involving the many conflicts that our world faces today, and how everyone else in the world reacts to it. What she means is that when there is a problem in the world facing prosecution because of someone's race, religion, or political views, the whole world wants input. They want to either help or hurt either side of the conflict, but either or they are giving it an adundance of attention. One recent terrorizing event was the bombing in Paris France. Another country attacked and hurt innocent people based on there views. In response, countless of helping hands reached out across the world to restore peace in Paris.
ReplyDeleteIn the United States, many people take for granted the many privileges that we have. Talk of people being persecuted for their race, religion, and views is always heard on the news, but do we really make it the center of our universe? In America we look at all of the rights that we have fought for and just remain still in our comfort blankets instead of helping other struggling people fight for these same rights. Conflicts over race, religion, and other freedoms is always presented as the most important thing in today’s times, and although the news seems to only focus on these things, all it seems to be to reporters is news and not a cause that they should risk their lives for. For example, when ISIS had executed 10 Christians a while back, it was the biggest headline around and became the top story of the time. I think that these persecutions should not only be the center of the universe in aspects of news, but in our minds they should be fights in which we are willing to help others have the same freedoms that we have here in America.
ReplyDeleteThis quote expresses to us the importance of identifying social injustices; and putting those injustices out for everyone to see. Elie Wiesel is identifying the social injustice of the persecution of someone because of their race, religion, or political views. This quote has such relevance in our world today, if we step back at look at the majority of people in our society, most, not all, but most of us are very involved and aware of what directly affects us. Yet, when we see a national news heading about a killing or crime of great proportion, we might stop for a second and think "wow that's unfortunate" but outside of that thought, most of us really don't care. I think this is because of the world we live in and what we expect out of our fellow people. While murder and assault are terrible things, it all seems like part of the "plan" or the way the world is. The only way that will change is when people finally let the things outside of their own "worlds" in. The emotion and the consequences that these social injustices carry with them. We especially see this idea of making social injustices such a bug deal in our media, when a terrible thing happens such as the shootings of schools or of minorities like we have seen in the past, if you turn on CNN that's all you see. Yet while these social injustices become the center of the media, they still don't really phase us, that's why this quote pushes us to let these tragedies into our lives(metaphorically) so that they actually affect us on an emotional level. Once that happens I believe that we as a people will start to really stand up against these social injustices.

ReplyDeleteI agree with what Ellie Wiesel said. I think nowadays many people are being judged just because of their religion , race , or political views. You can be quick with judging people , but you never know the reasons why they think the way they think. A huge debate going all around the world is the thing with ISIS. Yesterday , March 22 2016 , Belgiums airport got bombed and a subway station also. I think it is horrible that people think that they can express their beliefs by killing innocent people. Many terrorists are muslims , so people conclude that every muslim has the same beliefs . That is absolutly not true. ISIS is a radical group and they interpret the quran way different. People are putting all muslims in the same box. We need to stop ISIS before they destroy more than they already did. They are a central issue right now.
ReplyDeleteAnother big issue is the judging by race. I think it is not as big of an issue anymore , but it was. I think many people were trying to find excuses for hating the other race . I just don't get how people can hate other people because of their skincolor , but again , I don't know what made them think that way.
To me this quote means that whenever there is a problem involiving race,religion, or politics it becomes the center of our lives. I think when things like that happen people go out of there way to say what they think about the sistuation when it doesnt even involve that person. People like to have an opinion, I get that, but you need to be kind when giving one. I just think that people make huge deals about the smallest things because they have nothing better to do. I dont like seeing aggrumnets on twitter or facebook about something so simple and people beating eachother down about it. We should all love one and other and be kind and use our words wisley and not care so much about what other people think about us.
ReplyDeleteThis quote means that wherever persecution takes place, whether it's because of race or religion, it should be our focus to eliminate that persecution. All around the world people are being persecuted because of their religion or race, it has become a big problem in today's world, with some going to extreme lengths to express it. The Belgium and Paris bombings were done by people who don't have the same beliefs and values of those attacked. Racial discrimination is not as big of a problem as it was many years ago but it is still a big issue, segregation, even if not intended, still happens today in many big cities and it is our responsibility to eliminate that.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Rex Walls is a necessary man to blame for all of the families hardships. Due to his aggressive nature, and stubborn personality, he has gotten the family into a great deal of trouble many times. His excessive drinking, gambling, and no money control have completely made the family into the situation they are in now. Also the views he has in life, that he has influenced onto his children have caused them to fight with others, and in some cases like with the bb gun, they almost went to court. Lastly, Rex's unusual behavior and the outburst he had during the church ceremony, and even almost hitting the doctor show that he is not a righteous man of polite affairs and is not one to be trusted.
ReplyDeleteI learned that it was very tough for Elie to decide whether or not to take his father's rations when he was close to dieing. Also Elie's father wanted him to go with his mother on the right side of the death camp line at Auschwitz. It is really valiant how much information Wiesel has shared with us. It saddens me to know that he still cannot speak about certain topics. I appreciate how he is not angry at the world, but just doesn't understand how it could happen.
ReplyDeletei learned from this video that elie went through hell. i never really realized how horrific auschwitz was. They pushed bodies with bulldozers like these people werent actually people. More like garbage and it was very shocking
