C) Make a case for why Rose Mary Walls could be considered mentally ill. Remember, this is
speculation. Find THREE examples to support your argument.
Rex Walls is responsible for most of the family's hardships because he again, and again spends the family's money on things they could live without. Everytime that the family gets money he will go and buy something like bikes. They can never seem to have enough money to live off of because once they have money Rex blows through it in a heart beat instead of saving some of it. He also blows the money on hookers or his get rich quick ideas.
ReplyDeleteRex Walls is most responsible for the family's hardships. He is constantly drinking and will disappear without telling anyone where he is going. He spends the little money the family has on alcohol and prostitutes. He has no trouble finding jobs, but has a very hard time keeping them. He is known as the town drunk in Welch, and is incredibly rude to Rose Mary. He ran her down with his car and nearly threw her out a window. By putting his own wants and needs before his family's, he is certainly not the best father figure.
ReplyDelete3. I think Rosemary Walls is mentally ill because she chooses to stay with a man who is obviously smart in some ways but not in other ways. He constantly makes threats to her, abuses her and takes her money. They are always on the move or living in a rundown house that they don't even take care of. She never wanted to have kids, which explains why she never really acts like a mother. She smirks at Jeannette when she gets spanked by her dad. She let Jeannette make hotdogs with fire by herself when she was three. Even when she has the chance to escape him she still stays. She isn't in the right of mind.
ReplyDeleteA) One reason why Rex is most responsible for the hardships is because he does not in force rules or responsibilities for anyone. No one does any kind of cleaning and rarely cooking. Especially him, the most he does is gamble. Another reason is that he has no job.When he does get a job, it is low paying and he doesn't keep it for long. Lastly, Rex is too busy disappearing for nights on end. When he is home, Rex is usually drunk and destroys everything in his path.
ReplyDeleteRex Walls is the most responsible for the families hardships is because he is an alcoholic, he spends his wife's and children's money of booze like breaking the piggy bank with savings Jeanette and her siblings have been saving up for so Lori can go to New York with money. He says broken promises to them thinking he will build them a 'Glass Castle' or he also told them he is going to get gold which he never does.
ReplyDeleteRex Walls is arguably the most responsible for the hardships the family is facing. Every time he gets a job he loses it, like in Phoenix when he had a very good engineering job that gave him benefits as well. That job helped the family tremendously, they even got new bikes. As soon as he lost it things really started to go down hill. He calls himself the head of the household, so any thing that happens can be redirected towards his issues, based on what he says. He handles all of the money, and when he isn't spending it on drinking or gambling, I don't think he spends it very well. He is not a reliable father in any manner. So, because he is the head of the household, and the root of a lot of the issues, Rex walls is the most to blame.

For example he gets 5's, and 20's from Jeanette because he knows that she will likely give the money too him. Also with Rex Walls drinking so much he starts most all of the arguments and fights with Rosemary which even though they make up after a while, it has a big impact on their children. Rex Walls doesn't really seem to pay much attention for his kids or spend much time with his family. He is gone from home most of the time and an example of him not paying attention would be when Jeanette fell out of the car when she was younger.

Throughout the story Rex Walls and his family jump from city to city, place to place, in which he finds a job or many odd jobs provide for his family. Rex Walls becomes the most responsible for the family's hardships when he doesn't find a job, like in Welch, West Virginia. When Rex does not find a job, his family must survive on their own for a source of food. Rex also creates troubles when he spends all his money on alcohol and prostitution, like in Battle Mountain. Here Rex spends the paycheck of his wife for his own pleasure, both through prostitution and alcohol, leaving the family little to no money to buy food and necessary supplies. The final example of Rex's irresponsibility is when he gets drunk. During the times Rex is drunk, he has concurrently been physically abusive to his children and spouse. Rex during these times can also be destructive to the objects around him, like when he used his cigarette lighter to catch the Walls' christmas tree on fire, destroying his children's presents along with it. Rex Walls is constantly putting his family in hard times, the most common explanation for his actions is his addiction to alcohol.
ReplyDeleteI believe Rex Walls is most responsible for the family's hardships. 1, he is always getting in trouble for drinking and afraid to get caught by the police. 2, As a father of four kids, he should be a role model to his children. 3, Does not make the best decisions for his family, such as leaving the hospital "Rex Walls Style" when Jeanette got burned and also the mother's labor.

He also has committed a series of crimes that has made the family move out of the place they are into a lower place in order for him to hide himself. He also goes form one job to the next because something always goes wrong and he can never hold things together for his family.
ReplyDeleteRex Walls dream of finding gold is the driving factor behind the Walls family issues. Throughout the book he considers himself the head of household but I believe he is the head of the hardships the family is having to deal with on a daily basis. Rex Walls addiction to alcohol is one of the reasons he struggles to provide for the family along with his strong belief to find gold which will most likely never occur. If Rex could hold a steady job the families lives overall would be better.
ReplyDeleteFor all of the hardships that the Walls family is put through, the one that is most to blame is Rex Walls. He is selfish and abusive and does not give the proper care to his children. One example is when Rose Mary finally started to make her own money, he insisted that he would be in charge of it so it can be safely used. But instead, he used it to purchase alcohol and the company of prostitutes. Another example is how he is always making his family pack up and move. He is the one running from the FBI for breaking many laws, and is dragging his family around along with him. The last example is his abuse towards Rose Mary. He hits her and threatens her which scares his kids, and even though they ignore it in the beginning, they all start to realize how mean he is, especially when effected by alcohol.
ReplyDeleteRex Walls is the most responsible for the Wall’s family hardships because of his inability to have self control and his lack responsibility. Rex Walls is an alcoholic and a gambler which causes the family to frequently be in need. For example, when the family was at christmas mass Rex was drunk due to his heavy drinking throughout the day. In his drunken state while at mass, Rex began shouting at the priest denouncing god in front of the entire church which led to the Wall’s family being kicked out of Christmas mass. Another example of Rex causing hardships among the family is on Christmas day and the children begin opening the presents under the tree. As the children are opening the presents, Rex decides to light the tree on fire which ultimately ruins the tree and the presents. One last example of Rex being responsible for the family’s hardships is when he is abusive of Rosemary in front of the children and intentionally tries to hurt her.
ReplyDeleteRosemary Walls is most responsible for her family's hardships because is often 'disconnected' with the rest of her family. While Rex, however drunk, may not be helping the family, he is at least trying to support his family through finding small jobs. On the other hand, Rose Mary arguably does less work than even her kids, and spends her time dabbling in her art career that is unlikely to ever take off. Also, Rose Mary is arguably the most selfish of the Walls' family. There are several accounts Jeannette has where her mother finds chocolate or other luxuries, just to spoil herself with rather than donating it to their entire family. Last, Rose Mary's philosophies of endurance often proves to be too radical in handling life's hurdles. An example of this would be how throughout the novel, Rose Mary consistently denies her family's condition and even denies welfare and other advantageous programs.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Rosemary Walls is most responsible for the family's hardships because many times throughout the novel she seems to purposely look the other way at issues and situations that she could help out in. For example, Jeannete and Brian find a diamond ring out in the woods one day and they show their mother. She decides not to turn it in for money even though it is worth a lot and would help the family out tremendously. Jeannete says the ring could get them a lot of food and Rose Mary says, "but it could also improve my self-esteem. And at times like these, self-esteem is even more vital than food." Another example of Rose Mary being responsible for the family's troubles is how she says she doesn't want to be a teacher. She is educated and qualified but when Jeannette tells her she needs to get a job to support the family, Rose Mary responds by saying, "That sounds like an awful life." Another important example isn't directly stated but you can infer how Jeanette feels to her mother saying she can't leave Rex. Jeannete tells her mother that she needs to leave their father and she responds simply by saying, "I can't leave your father." Rose Mary definitely could leave Rex and start a new life with the kids but chooses not to. Rex is a lost cause when it comes to saving the family and Rose Mary is really their only hope but she continues to ignore the family's worsening hardships.

Although qualified and able bodied, he cannot keep jobs due to outspoken feelings and criticizing his employers, often leaving the family poor. When there is a steady income into the household, he spends most of it on alcohol and exquisite dinners they do not need. Being an alcoholic, he often comes home drunk, and when he does, he often verbally and sometimes physically attacking his wife, lowering household morale and increasing sadness throughout the home.
ReplyDeleteThrough my reading of the Glass Castle, I've considered that Rose Mary Walls is mentally challenged in some way. An example I observed was at the start of the story when Rose Mary let Jeanette cook on her own at the age of 3. When Jeanette gets hurt, Rose Mary doesn't feel at all accountable for the situation and being that she's a mother I have to ask how she could be so irresponsible for her children. Another example is when Rose Mary is talking about the death of her child and somehow doesn't show any emotion. To me that conveyed that Rose Mary was almost incapable of showing emotions and holding ties to her own children, something that is very unnatural especially for a mother. A final example can be seen throughout the story, and that's Rose Mary's ability to show no emotion and remain so careless about her or her family's situation.

He does a bit but not enough to keep them out of poverty. Instead he uses the money for drinking and prostitution, leaving his wife and children without food and basically neglecting them till he remembers. Yes i believe it is Rex’s fault for the hardships they have endured.
ReplyDeleteThrough textual evidence I believe Rosemary Walls is the main reason for the family's hardships. Throughout the whole book she tends to not give her two cents in anywhere, literally. She has many things worth of value, such as inherited land, silver rings, etc that could be used to provide an income. She also is more than capable of obtaining a job as a teacher but refuses to do so merely because she thinks it'd be boring and wants to continue on with her art- this would provide a steady income for the family. Lastly, I believe Rosemary Walls is the reason for the family's hardships because she is selfish and refuses to help the family. Not just with work and providing money, but with other things, such as keeping care of their house (or at least trying to), or leaving Rex, which would provide them with child welfare. She also always speaks of how much she wishes she wasn't there and how she hates her life, which is just discerning to the children.

She also withholds chocolate from her children to have it for herself. I think they could have had a "normal" life if Rosemary would have helped out a little .
